Bell Atlantic originally operated in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The name combines veritas (Latin for truth) and horizon. Verizon Wireless merged Bell Atlantic's wireless network, Vodafone's AirTouch and PrimeCo holdings, and GTE's wireless division, creating a mobile carrier with 23 million customers. Verizon became the largest local telephone company in the U.S., operating 63 million telephone lines in 40 states and inheriting 25 million mobile customers. Inc.
